Male Sexual Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory dysfunction are the most common problems facing a man's sexual health.  Dr. Boyle will perform a detailed history and physical examination to identify possible reversible causes of the sexual dysfunction.  Dr. Boyle is committed to finding solutions to these sensitive problems, and takes the time to listen to both patient and partner. A comprehensive laboratory evaluation to identify biological causes such as elevated cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal abnormalities such as low testosterone, will be performed.  When indicated, more specialized testing may be recommended and performed by Dr. Boyle.

Erectile dysfunction may be the first symptom of cardiovascular disease, which can result in atherosclerosis, heart disease, and heart attack.  Erectile dysfunction may also be the first symtom of diabetes.  Dr. Boyle looks upon the diagnosis and treatment of impotence as a crucial step in the identification of these other disease states, and works closely with patient's primary care physician, general internist or cardiologist to take prompt action to evaluate and intervene early.

For erectile dysfunction, first-line therapy includes reversing all possible causes such as cessation of smoking, alcohol consumption or drug use, discontinuation or change of prescription medication, and sex therapy.  First-line medical treatment includes phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, with progression to second-line therapies directed at the penis such as vacuum erection device, intrurethral prostaglandin, and intracavernosal injection therapy.  Dr. Boyle performs her own intracavernosal injection teaching with her patients. Third-line therapy is surgery with the placement of a three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis.

For the treatment of ejaculatory dysfunction, sexual counseling and behavioral modifications may be recommended, and medical treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors may be prescribed prescribed.
